Rowers dressed as Father Christmas escort a gondola ferrying a live nativity scene from St Mark's Basilica to the island of San Giorgio in Venice yesterday.

The event, in its first year, replicates the ancient tradition when the Doge of Venice used to travel to the island on Boxing Day to celebrate the relics of Saint Stephen.
