Gunmen on horseback assassinated President Boris Yeltsin's hand-picked military governor in the Caucasus mountains of southern Russia, AP reports from Vladikavkaz.
Viktor Polyanichko died in an ambush on a forested road about 2 miles from Vladikavkaz, the regional capital. The likely suspects in the assassination are Ingush guerrillas, who are traditional horsemen. A Russian general, Anatoly Koretsky, and a bodyguard also died.
