Revellers being sprayed with water after the Chupinazo, the official opening of the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, yesterday.

The festival kicks off with a messy party in Pamplona's town square, followed over the next eight days by the running of the bulls.

It is a symbol of Spanish culture – despite heavy condemnation from animal-rights groups – and attracts thousands of tourists to watch the bull runs.
