Third British man in a month drowns at Malta beauty spot Blue Lagoon
Holiday makers spotted the British man unresponsive in the water yesterday afternoon
A British man has drowned off the coast of Malta, at the same spot where two other British tourists’ drowned just weeks ago.
The 59-year-old man, who has not yet been named, drowned in the Blue Lagoon on the small Maltese island of Comino yesterday afternoon.
Holidaymakers spotted the man in the water apparently unresponsive at around 2:30pm. A lifeguard attended and the man was airlifted to hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.
An investigation is now underway.
Yesterday evening, a spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We stand ready to provide consular assistance to his family at this difficult time.”
The area is a well-known beauty spot popular with tourists and renowned for its white sands and clear blue sea.
On 23 May two British men, both aged 35, also drowned in the Blue Lagoon.
