WASHINGTON - The US State Department yesterday said that the French Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe, engaged in 'strange moral calculus' and questionable logic in his prescriptions for peace in Bosnia, writes Rupert Cornwell.

This unusually blunt and undiplomatic rebuke by the State Department widens the rift between the two countries on how to cope with the deteriorating situation in Bosnia.

A State Department spokesman said it would require 'a massive intervention of Western ground-troops to . . . in effect, force a settlement on unwilling parties.'
