Lima (Reuter) - President Alberto Fujimori, riding a wave of support for his government's capture of Abimael Guzman, the Shining Path leader, said he would be tried and sentenced by a military court by 7 October. A higher court would have an additional 20 days to rule in the event of an appeal.
'Peru will receive an example of military justice; the state will demonstrate that Peru is a guarantor of law and morality,' said Mr Fujimori, who has said he would personally favour a death sentence. He also said he would decree a new law to punish guerrilla sympathisers.
