PITTSBURGH (Reuter) - The second transplant of a baboon liver into a human was completed yesterday at the University of Pittsburgh after 13 hours of surgery. The recipient was a 62-year-old man. The operation was carried out by doctors Satoru Todo, Andreas Tzakis and John Fung.
The three surgeons performed the first baboon-to-human liver transplant last June. Like the earlier baboon-liver recipient, the latest patient was gravely ill with hepatitis B.
