An Israeli civilian was reportedly stabbed by a Palestinian woman in the Old City of Jerusalem, according to an Israel Defence Forces spokesperson.

The victim, who is in his 30s, reportedly drew his weapon and shot his 18-year-old attacker.

Both are now receiving medical treatment.

The man was stabbed from behind in his upper body, sustaining moderate injuries, according to the BBC.

According to an Israeli Police spokesman, the Palestinian woman was 18 years old.

The Palestinian suspect was severely injured, according to NBC News.

"When I arrived to the scene I saw a male who was stabbed in his upper body," Haim Atias, one of the first people at the scene told NBC News.

"With our help he was evacuated to a hospital. We also saw a woman ... who was wounded in serious condition after she was shot."

The attack comes after a Palestinian man stabbed and killed two people and wounded a toddler before being killed by police in Jerusalem's Old City.

Following the attack, Israel took the unprecedented step of banning Palestinians from entering the walled Old City in occupied East Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to take "additional steps to prevent terrorism" including "expediting the demolition of terrorists' homes" and widening the use of administrative detentions without trial. On Facebook, he vowed to open a "harsh offensive on Palestinian Islamic terror".
