Puerto Ricans voted against pursuing statehood, choosing instead to remain a US commonwealth in the first ballot on the island's status in more than 25 years, AP reports from San Juan. Sunday's vote turned back the strongest movement this century for full union with Washington. The island's Governor, Pedro Rossello, who spearheaded the campaign to become the US 51st state, conceded defeat but urged supporters to continue fighting for the cause.
