40% rise in calls to Shelter's advice services

Rising housing and living costs plus housing support cuts leads to increased demand

The housing charity Shelter says it has fielded 40% more calls in the last 12 months from people concerned about housing costs and debt.

In the last six months, visitors to the housing charity's online housing costs advice have doubled. In March, Shelter research suggested that nearly a third of people have cut back on food to pay housing costs.

Today Shelter runs its advice-sharing day 'Pass It On' to raise awareness of the importance of getting advice early to help prevent people from losing their home.

"This latest research highlights the frightening lack of options available to people who are fighting to keep a roof over their head," said Campbell Robb, Shelter’s Chief Executive. "Sadly, with little remaining of the housing safety net meant to support them in tough times, many can quickly find themselves at risk of losing their home.

"Every day we speak to people who are on the brink and have nowhere left to turn. But getting early support  can help families get back in control of their finances and prevent the downward spiral that can ultimately lead to homelessness.
