Shot of the day

Too little has been seen of the real Joe Root in this series. The luxurious manner in which he leant into a cover drive in the fourth over of the day was a reminder of what he is made of.

Ball of the day

Nathan Lyon, unfairly maligned, had Kevin Pietersen in a terrible muddle from round the wicket in mid-afternoon. A ball which bounced and turned beat him all ends up, hit him on the pad but was missing leg.

Memory of the day

After hours of turgid pit-a-pat, Chris Woakes came to the wicket for his maiden Test innings, batting rather high at No 6 in place of the dropped Jonny Bairstow, and drove his first ball magisterially for four.

Moment of the day

Pietersen received a memento for becoming England’s leading aggregate run-scorer, though when Jimmy Anderson became the leading bowler he insisted on a low-key private ceremony.
