Ashes 2015: England forced to follow-on as serious doubts emerge over Adam Lyth's England future following another dismal innings

England were asked to follow on by Australia on the third morning of the fifth Investec Test. Although they added 42 runs in sprightly fashion to their wretched overnight score of 107-8, it still left them 332 runs behind.

Dismissed after eight overs of the day for 149, they were 31-1 at lunch. The batsman out, almost inevitably, was Adam Lyth who edged a ball from Peter Siddle that lifted to second slip. It was hardly misfortune since Siddle had already beaten him several times outside off.

Lyth threw back his head, closed his eyes in anguish and walked slowly off, possibly for the last time as an England batsman. In nine innings in this Ashes series he has made only 115 runs with a top score of 37.

England made more of a fist of it than they might have done earlier in the day. Making the most of the attacking fields, Mark Wood played some handsome drives while Moeen Ali continued the splendid form he has shown all summer.

They were out to successive balls from Mitchell Johnson, Wood miscuing a hook and Moeen steering a catch to slip.
