Batsman of the day

It was a day of unfettered run-gathering at Bristol as Surrey amassed 626 for 6 in reply to Gloucestershire's measly first-innings 112.

There were big centuries for the young opener Rory Burns (199) and far more experienced Vikram Solanki (143) before the prodigiously gifted Jason Roy took on a wilting home attack to smash 121 not out off 71 balls with 10 fours and eight sixes.

The South African-born 23-year-old has been on fire in the T20 Blast this season too, meaning his county were not quite so desperate for a rather better-known native of South Africa to return.

Bowler of the day

New Road, Worcester, is not renowned for being a dusty spinner's paradise at this time of year – the square is often under several feet of the flooding River Severn.

All this is of no concern to a tweaker with the prodigious powers of Saeed Ajmal. The Pakistan purveyor of mysterious variations took 13 wickets there against Essex last month and picked up 7 for 63 today for the hosts as Hampshire were bowled out for 219 in reply to Worcestershire's 402 for 9 declared and were forced to follow on in this clash at the top of the Second Division.
