County Championship round-up: Durham extend lead over Yorkshire

Title contenders Durham turned the screw against First Division leaders Yorkshire at Scarborough, stretching their overnight score of 406 for 6 to 573, their highest total since May 2011 and their biggest against Yorkshire, who closed the second day at 182 for 3 in reply, with New Zealand all-rounder Kane Williamson unbeaten on 76.

A maiden first-class hundred for Michael Richardson made him the third centurion in the innings for Durham, who began the week 25.5 points behind Yorkshire in second place with a game in hand but still missing their principle pace threat, Graham Onions, to injury.

Sussex, in third place and due in Durham next week, were bowled out for 311 by Warwickshire at Edgbaston, where former England Lions fast bowler Maurice Chambers, making his debut on loan from Essex, took the last two wickets to complete his first five-wicket haul since July 2010.

Steve Magoffin claimed his 50th and 51st wickets of the season as Warwickshire lost two wickets without a run scored in reply. But a third century in four matches by Laurie Evans, supported by Tim Ambrose (61) in a stand of 137 for the fifth wicket, gave Warwickshire a chance to overhaul the Sussex score. Evans, who made 137, had been dropped on 45 by James Anyon at mid-on when the total was 89 for 4.

Australia's Test opener Chris Rogers was out twice in a day as Middlesex's chances receded against Somerset at Lord's, where they were dismissed for 106 and asked to follow on.

India's Piyush Chawla, whom Somerset recruited primarily for his prowess as a leg-spinner, made 112 from a total of 449.

That put pressure on Derbyshire, who slipped back into the bottom two as they were bowled out for 219 by fellow strugglers Surrey at The Kia Oval.

Batsman of the day

Northamptonshire's all-rounder David Willey continued an impressive run of form with the bat when he struck 81 against Glamorgan in the Second Division at Wantage Road, giving him the distinction – possibly unique – of achieving career-best scores in three competitions in consecutive innings, following his 60 against Surrey in the T20 final and his 167 against Warwickshire in a YB40 match last Monday.
