County Championship round-up: Leicestershire off-spinner Jigar Naik claims five wickets in an innings for first time since August 2011

Among the misfortunes to befall Leicestershire last season, the injury to Jigar Naik was probably quite telling. The off-spinner, the first Leicester-born Asian cricketer to represent the county when he made his debut in 2006, made impressive progress in 2010 and 2011, taking 84 first-class wickets, but snapped ankle ligaments in May last year and could play no cricket for three months, struggling thereafter to re-establish himself in often unhelpful conditions. Leicestershire will hope it marks a turning point after Naik claimed five wickets in an innings for the first time since August 2011, taking all four Worcestershire wickets to fall before rain set in, giving him 5 for 98 from 35 overs.

Batsman of the day

Two weeks after carrying his bat for 219 in a Hampshire total of 500-9 declared against Worcestershire, captain Jimmy Adams is holding his side together against Gloucestershire in Bristol, where he is unbeaten on 129 in a total of 264 for 9. Hampshire were 97 for 8 at one stage on the opening day but Adams finally found a partner to stick with him in left-arm spinner Danny Briggs. They extended their partnership to 128 before Briggs fell for 54.

Ashes watch

England captain Alastair Cook's hopes of building on his half-century overnight in his last match before the opening Test lasted less than 15 minutes at Old Trafford before Kyle Hogg's excellent ball had him caught behind. Tim Bresnan removed Somerset's nightwatchman at Headingley but it was Adil Rashid, England's forgotten leg-spinner, who continued to be the major figure after his 180 with the bat. Rashid dismissed in-form Alviro Petersen and Arul Suppiah with consecutive balls to leave Somerset five down and 315 behind.
