England won the first Test after a thrilling final day against India.

Ben Stokes took the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli on the final morning as England climbed off the canvas to record a 31-run win to take the lead in the five-match series.

Kohli had threatened to take the game away from Joe Root's side, as he did with his masterful 149 in the first innings, but Stokes was equal trapping him LBW for 51.

And then the Durham all-rounder, who will miss the Lord's test to appear in court, returned to dismiss last man Hardik Pandya and spark jubilant scenes.

Pandya again with the strike and, as he has been ever since he got out here, he's batting a long way out of his crease. Behind the sticks Bairstow has noticed and is looking to keep him honest at every opportunity. Pandya looks for a sharp single and tests Jennings at mid on. Shy at the stumps. Missed. Replay shows he'd have been just safe. Just. It's tense out there.

Anderson again and again it's Pandya to try and survive. That's too good as it rattles just past his outstretched blade and through to Bairstow. While Anderson is always looking to move it away don't sleep on the one coming back the other way and Pandya isn't as one angled in at his pads is fended away for a single. Kohli resolutely defends his way through the remainder.

Pandya is in for bed and breakfast here. He is digging in and then some. Broad again probing that fourth stump line before he errs a fraction full looking for that magic ball and Pandya gives it the full maker's name and dispatches it to the fence through mid on. Wonderful stroke, the best of the morning and a little of that tension lifted.

Over 45: India 133-6 (chasing 194)

Anderson this time looking for a magic ball of his own and strays on to Pandya's pads and that's meat and drink and is flicked through mid on for three. Kohli on strike and that's 50 as he turns one round the corner for four to fine leg. Another marvelous innings from the great man, this. But it'll mean nothing if he can't see them home. Still plenty of work to do.

Over 46: India 141-6 (chasing 194)

India are loosening up here after that tense start. Pandya climbs into Broad to open the 46th and drives him back past him for four. Lovely shot. A little full again but a lovely shot nonetheless. That's even better. Too straight this time and Pandya walks down and drives him through mid on with the minimum of fuss for another boundary. This is just what Kohli needs - someone at the other end easing the burden.

We have our first bowling change of the morning and rather than Curran, as was mooted, it's Stokes we'll see first. He bowled exceptionally in the first innings and picked up the wicket of Rahul last night.

Wow. That's a cracker and, yes, he's out. Kohli is gone. Stokes raps the Indian skipper right in front and it looks like it's knocking all three out. He reviews, of course he does, but yep, that's as plumb as they come. Kohli is gone and England believe again. Wow.

Stokes is the man for the big occasion and hang on, he has another. A nasty, rising delivery is too good for Mohammed Shami, who nicks through to Bairstow, and England are flying. They need two more to win.

Here is Curran. He got Pandya in the first innings with a brute of a yorker and he'll be looking to swing the ball in late again here you feel. The crowd are up, Edgbaston is rocking. If only this was a hundred balls long and we had 15 per side, eh? New man Ishant Sharma on strike to the Surrey man. Some encouraging shape for him as he warms to his task. A good start.

Stokes chugging in against Sharma and that's squirted through to third man where there's inexplicably no fielder. Stokes has the teapot on and he's not happy with his skipper and you can understand why. Stokes responds with a fierce, rearing bouncer that Sharma does well to protect himself from as it balloons over the cordon and on to the boundary. Surely there needs to be a third man now? More runs and India now only need 42. This one isn't over yet.

So only the one over for Curran as Root shuffles his pack and pulls out Rashid for the first time today. The leggy removed Sharma in the first innings with a naughty googly and that clearly is in the England captain's thinking here. He starts with a googly again that Sharma nearly falls over trying to snuff out. Another spits and flashes past the outside edge. And another googly does him all ends up for what looks like LBW. The umpire doesn't think so but Rashid likes it and England review. It looks good to me... certainly no bat... OUT. Rashid has his man. An inspired bowling change from Root. England need one.
