Snape century fails to stave off defeat

Nottinghamshire came out on top in a rain-affected National League First Division match with Gloucestershire at Trent Bridge yesterday. Adverse weather meant the Duckworth/Lewis method was used and the home side ran out winners after scoring 228 for 4 in reply to the visitors' 228 for 8.

Jeremy Snape had dragged Gloucestershire back into contention with an unbeaten 104 as the visitors came back from 52 for 6 from their reduced allocation of 44 overs.

Mark Hardinges contributed 65 to the cause as he and Snape broke the record for the highest seventh-wicket partnership in the domestic one-day game. They added 164 from 155 balls before Hardinges was out.

Mike Powell and Dougie Brown both reached the 70s as Warwickshire won by five wickets against Northamptonshire at Northampton. Powell (78) and Brown (73) steered the visitors to 219 for 5 in reply to the home side's 216 for 4.

Michael Lumb (66) and Vic Craven (55) rescued Yorkshire as the home side struggled to 189 for 8 after being 24 for 3 at Headingley.

The Kent medium-pacer Matthew Walker claimed four wickets for 24 runs and that proved enough as Dave Fulton (82) contributed most to Kent's 191 for 6 and victory.

Persistent rain at The Oval reduced Surrey's match with Somerset to a quick 10-over thrash and the visitors won by eight wickets, scoring 69 for 2 in reply to Surrey's 68 for 5.

Durham recovered from a poor start to stay at the top of the Second Division, beating Derbyshire by four wickets at Derby.

Chasing 180 on a slow pitch, the all-rounder Graeme Welch had Durham in trouble at 11 for 2. But a rib injury to Paul Aldred left Derbyshire a bowler short and a sixth-wicket stand of 65 in 11 overs between Michael Gough and Andrew Pratt swung things Durham's way. Michael Di Venuto hit 71, but got little support as Derbyshire ran up 179 for 7.

John Crawley and Neil Fairbrother steered Lancashire to a seven-wicket win over Middlesex at Old Trafford.

Crawley (36no) and Fairbrother (14no) saw Lancashire home after Glen Chapple had hit 56 and Andrew Flintoff 40 to set up the victory, Lancashire reaching 185 for 3 off just 29.2 overs. Ben Hutton top scored for Middlesex with 44 as the visitors made 184 for 9.

Glamorgan beat Essex at Chelmsford, thanks to Keith Newell's 97 and an unbeaten 87 by Matthew Maynard. Glamorgan had reached 254 for 2 and then restricted the home side to 243 for 6.

Worcestershire recorded a third win in four games over Sussex, making 210 for 6 after being put in at Horsham. Sussex's hopes vanished after they slipped from 73 for 1 to 79 for 6, and they were bowled out for 140.
