TOTTENHAM were yesterday ordered to pay pounds 900,000 more than they wanted for Colin Calderwood, the former Swindon central defender, whose value was set by a tribunal at pounds 1.25m. Spurs had offered just pounds 350,000 while Swindon had asked for pounds 1.75m.

The decision was a blow to Spurs, who may be forced to return to the transfer market because their young England striker, Nicky Barmby, is likely to miss the first two months of the season with shin splints. Barmby, who sees a specialist today, joins Paul Allen, Darren Anderton and the new signing Jason Dozzell on the injured list.

However, Third Division Mansfield were delighted with the tribunal ruling, which provides them with a pounds 625,000 dividend on a sale they completed eight years ago. By the terms of Calderwood's pounds 27,500 transfer, Mansfield stood to gain 50 per cent of a subsequent move.

Terry Venables, the former Tottenham chief executive, will manage a Great Britain XI, including Kenny Dalglish, Alan Shearer, Bryan Robson and Chris Waddle, against Liverpool on 10 October in a testimonial for Steve Nicol.

Norwich have paid Clyde pounds 300,000 for the Scotland Under-21 goalkeeper, Scott Howie, as understudy for Bryan Gunn. Gunn is thought to have suffered a recurrence of the back injury which kept him out for three months last year but Norwich remain hopeful he will face Manchester United on Sunday.

Birmingham City have agreed a pounds 325,000 fee with Leeds for their central defender Chris Whyte while Sheffield United have signed Willie Falconer from Middlesbrough for a fee to be agreed. Newcastle are unlikely to spend again to replace Peter Beardsley, who will be out for six weeks after sustaining a triple fracture of his cheekbone in a collision with Neil Ruddock in the testimonial game for Liverpool's Ronnie Whelan. Beardsley, a pounds 1.5m buy from Everton, underwent surgery yesterday.
