England vs Andorra: Fans predict ‘easy victory’ in World Cup qualifier

England returned to World Cup qualifying action with a drab 1-0 win over minnows Andorra, the world’s 173rd-ranked team, in a serviceable but uninspiring performance from Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Noni Madueke was a bright spark for the visitors and was rewarded with an assist for Harry Kane’s 50th-minute opener, latching onto a deflection and laying off a cross into space for the club captain.

It was a 72nd international goal for Kane, but while England had plenty of possession and touches in the opposition box, they were low on quality, with Gordon missing a chance to tap in at close range from a Madueke cut-back in the closing stages of extra time.

Several players will be off to the Club World Cup after this qualifier and the friendly against Senegal that follows, underlining the hectic schedule with which top footballers have to contend, and some exhaustion was evident after a lengthy club season.

What to expect from Tuchel's England side

Tuchel has overseen two wins from two since taking charge of the Three Lions at the start of the year and England sit top of Group K in Europe’s World Cup qualifiers. They defeated Albania 2-0 and Latvia 3-0 during Tuchel’s first camp with Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze and Harry Kane in particular impressing the German coach.

The next camp is preparing to face Andorra, who have lost both of their qualifiers so far, before an international friendly against Senegal which should prove to be a sterner test for Tuchel’s charges.

England team news

Ivan Toney was recalled to the England squad for this international window, while Trevoh Chalobah was given his first senior call-up. Cole Palmer could be deployed in behind Harry Kane, who appears set to move level with Bobby Charlton and Frank Lampard on 106 England caps.

Ollie Watkins has withdrawn due to a minor injury, while Bukayo Saka and Conor Gallagher will not feature due to their own issues.
