Moyes can be considered a legend - Maresca

Chelsea earned a vital three points in the race for Europe after defeating Everton 1-0 in a close encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues, who are aiming to secure a place in the Champions League next year, moved up to fourth in the Premier League table following Nicolas Jackson’s sweeping strike in the first half.

Enzo Maresca’s men were the controlling side, especially in the first half, and forced a couple of decent saves out of Jordan Pickford who was on form yet again for the Toffees. Jackson’s effort, scored from range with a finely directed strike that hit the inside of the far post, defeated the Everton goalkeeper and was a difference maker in the end.

Everton fought back folowing attacking changes from David Moyes but Robert Sanchez made two crucial stops to deny Beto and Dwight McNeil.

Relive the updates from Stamford Bridge below:

Chelsea 1-0 Everton

39 mins: Oh.

Mykolenko and Robert Sanchez come together in the Chelsea box.

Both men collide heavily with the Everton defender completely taken out trying to catch the ball.

Sanchez seems to have had the wind taken out of him and the physios from both teams are on to check over the players.

Chelsea 1-0 Everton

36 mins: Other than the goal there hasn’t been much to shout about from Stamford Bridge.

Nevermind!

Palmer floats a nice pass into the box and finds Noni Madueke.

The Chelsea attacker whips a header at goal and clashes heads with Nathan Patterson.

The ball loops into the hands of Jordan Pickford and Madueke seems fine to play on.

Chelsea 1-0 Everton

33 mins: A cross from the left is easily cleared by Chalobah who is having a fine outing for Chelsea so far.

It’s a sign of more urgency from Everton though which is a good thing for the neutrals.

Chelsea 1-0 Everton

30 mins: Can Everton respond to that goal?

They’ve been defending for most of the first half and have had few chances of their own.

Chelsea have been the dominant force and that goal will settle down the nerves in this must-win clash for Enzo Maresca’s men.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Everton (Nicolas Jackson, 27')

Oh wow!

What a strike this is. Trevoh Chalobah takes the ball off Beto and gives it to Enzo Fernandez.

The midfielder feeds it up to Nicolas Jackson who touches, turns, then laces a first time shot into the bottom left corner!

27 mins: A free kick for Chelsea is taken by Enzo Fernandez who flicks the ball into the middle.

Jordan Pickford comes out to punch the ball but finds Marc Cucurella.

He chests it down then hooks a shot wide of the target.

Big chance, probably the best of the match so far.

Chelsea 0-0 Everton

24 mins: That’s nicely worked from Everton.

The ball is fed up to Beto who flicks it inside to Illiman Ndiaye. He drives to the box then pokes it out wide where a cross is whipped quickly into the middle.

Beto is the target but Trevoh Chalobah wins the aerial challenge and nods the ball to Moises Caicedo who clears the danger.

Chelsea 0-0 Everton

21 mins: A physical battle between Beto and Levi Colwill is won by the Everton forward who holds up the ball and wins his team a free kick.

Everton send it over to the left then work a diagonal pass out to Jack Harrison but the winger is unable to keep the ball in play.

Chelsea 0-0 Everton

18 mins: Chelsea are having plenty of space to work with and there’s been a few little errors from Everton at the back.

Things like taking too long to play the pass or clear the ball which is allowing the hosts to turn it over deep in their attacking third.

Chelsea win another corner but this one is dealt with by Jack Harrison who wins a free kick for the Toffees.

Chelsea 0-0 Everton

15 mins: A corner ball is knocked short to Palmer. He gives it to Romeo Lavia who returns the ball before Palmer lifts the cross to the back post.

Colwill is the there and turns a header towards goal but it’s deflected behind for another set piece.

This one is curled into the penalty area but Everton clear it well.
