Maresca on playing on deadline day and transfer latest

Chelsea beat West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League on Monday night as Enzo Maresca’s side returned to the Champions League places.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides as Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernandez spurned chances, with West Ham more than happy to sit back and wait to pounce on Chelsea mistakes.

And they did exactly that as Levi Colwill’s pass back towards goal went straight into the path of an unmarked Jarrod Bowen, who was clean through and arrowed a low finish past Filip Jorgensen.

The second half started with chances for both sides, but it was Enzo Maresca’s changes that paid off as Pedro Neto rifled in after pinball in the box.

From there, Chelsea were in the ascendancy, peppering the West Ham area before Cole Palmer’s cross took a cruel deflection off Aaron Wan-Bissaka, taking it into the back of the West Ham net to move the Blues back into the Premier League’s top four.

HALF-TIME! Chelsea 0-1 West Ham

It wasn’t a classic first half at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea have shown enough to be ahead - but coupled with a moment of lacking concentration from Colwill, it means they’re behind.

The hosts will know they have enough to still win this game, but they’ll need to be more direct and a little less pedestrian in possession.

HALF-TIME! Chelsea 0-1 West Ham

Lawrence Ostlere at Stamford Bridge:

“I was right behind that pass by Levi Colwill and he might as well have sent a text to Jarrod Bowen ahead of time.

“Bowen read it, Colwill’s teammates didn’t, and once the West Ham captain was in behind, the goal felt inevitable. West Ham fans went berserk, while Graham Potter stayed pretty stoic.”

The referee brings the first half to an end in this London derby, and Chelsea go in behind despite being the better of the two sides.

Work to do for the hosts.

Chelsea are putting the pressure on here, with a couple of crosses cleared before Palmer tests Areola with an effort from long range.

A late chance for Chelsea potentially, as they win a free-kick just over 25 yards out.

Palmer and James are lining it up – and the former hits it, curling a brilliant effort that looks like it’s bound for the top corner before Areola sprawls across and gets a fingertip to it.

There’ll be three minutes of added time.

GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 West Ham

Nightmare for Colwill, as he tussles with Kudus as they fight for the ball from the West Ham goal kick. He wins the intial duel but plays a pass backwards under pressure from the Ghanaian, and it’s straight to Jarrod Bowen, who is clean through.

The England man drives towards goal and fires in a low angled effort into the corner past Jorgensen.

Not a bad effort from Sancho as he receives the pass from Madueke on the counter, cuts back in and curls an effort over the bar.

Smart stuff from Kudus as he makes a run inside Colwill from a long free-kick, and manages to get a shot away that is straight at Jorgensen.
