England get away with one, but also get a lot to think about.
Harry Kane scored his 50th international goal with a contentious late penalty, to secure a 1-1 draw against Germany that Gareth Southgate’s side probably didn’t deserve. The mixed feelings were further emphasised by the context. This was undeniably a good result, from a middling performance, that also represents the first time that England have failed to win two consecutive games since June 2019.
That stat shows how far they’ve come, but maybe reminds there is also a bit to go. It was not a quirk that they failed to win this game, for all the caveats of a Nations League game.
The most notable aspect of the match was how Germany looked like they would play this way regardless of the fixture.
Hansi Flick has given them a new identity, that is itself so easy to see. It is something England still lack, and does raise more questions about what next for the summer. It is not all Southgate is missing, mind.
His side also lack the kind of notional holding midfielder that can play the sort of through ball Joshua Kimmich did in the 50th minute of this match, so divinely setting up Jonas Hofmann for his third international goal.
England did rally, though, which is to their credit.

86 mins: Nico Schlotterbeck clips Harry Kane as the ball comes into the box from the left and the England captain goes down. Initially the penalty isn’t given but the referee is asked to look at the pitchside monitor. He does and reverses his decision.
Kane will have the chance to level things for England.

84 mins: Chance! This is a huge opportunity for England as Bowen is played into the right side of the box and laces a pass across the six-yard area. It bobbles over to the back post where Lukas Klostermann turns it wide of the post!

81 mins: Grealish wins a corner for England and Trippier knocks it short to Sterling. Sterling cuts inside onto his right foot but blasts his shot well over the crossbar.

78 mins: Bukayo Saka is going to make way for Jarrod Bowen. Bowen was arguably England’s best player against Hungary, can he recreate that form against Germany?
His first involvement is to drive past Kimmich on the right wing but the German midfielder gets to him with a sliding tackle and puts the ball out of play.

75 mins: Close! Grealish has got England talking. Everytime he gets the ball he drives into the box and takes on the defenders. This time he fizzes a cross over to the back post where Kane arrives and directs the ball towards goal only to be denied by Neuer cutting off the angle and chesting it away!

72 mins: Mason Mount is the man hooked off to allow Jack Grealish to come on. Harry Kane is strong to hold up the ball int the middle of the pitch and he guides to to Declan Rice to initiate a counter-attack. Rice feeds it over to Grealish who dribbles into the box and lays it back to Rice but the midfielder loses possession.

69 mins: Gundogan lifts a cross to the back post that Walker heads clear. Germany recover the ball and send it over to Raum on the left side. He floats a cross into the opposite side of the box where Muller arrives and volleys his effort into the floor. It bounces up and looks ot be sneaking into the goal but Pickford shuffles across and palms it wide.

66 mins: Raum dinks a pass over the top and almost plays Havertz into the left side of the box but Pickford is sharply off his line and smothers the ball before the forward can get there.
Jack Grealish is getting ready to come on for England.

63 mins: The game is drifting away from England here. Germany are too comfortable on the ball and England are sitting back and letting them play.
Musiala and Hofman are being taken off by Hansi Flick with Serge Gnabry and Timo Werner brought on. Not a bad duo to call on for the German manager.

60 mins: Sterling’s cross into the box is very wild and he belts it straight out of play. Kieran Trippier is playing a bit higher up the pitch on the left side as the Three Lions look to push a few yards higher up the pitch.
