Cristiano Ronaldo will be made to wait to find out whether or not he will be suspended for Juventus’s visit to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

Ronaldo was controversially sent off half an hour into Juve’s 2-0 win at Valencia on Wednesday evening after appearing to pull at the hair of defender Jeison Murillo, and left the pitch in tears.

He has received an automatic one-match ban, ruling him out of the home match against Swiss side Young Boys on 2 October, but Uefa could chose to extend that ban.

The governing body’s disciplinary panel will wait to receive a report from German referee Felix Brych before making its decision. According to Uefa’s regulations, a suspension would only be extended if Ronaldo’s actions were deemed a “serious assault”.

Brych was notified of the incident by the additional official positioned by Valencia’s goal, but Juventus manager Max Allegri felt further help from video assistant technology would have clarified the incident.

“Going down to 10 men in the Champions League for an incident like that is disappointing,” Allegri said. “We risked losing tonight with this and we’ll miss him for the next games too.”

Juventus are second in group H behind United, who beat Young Boys 3-0 in Bern.
