Gary Lineker has become the latest person to fall to a Twitter bet after the Match of the Day presenter agreed to have his ears pinned back if Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 1-0. The problem? Real did exactly that.

Karim Benzema’s first-half strike gave Real a 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League semi-final first leg, and the former England international had tweeted earlier in the night “If this finishes 1-0 I’ll get my ears pinned back”.

Lineker, 53, is not the first person to fall foul on the social media site after making a promise that hinged on a football result.

One Chelsea fan was forced to get a tattoo of John Obi Mikel’s name on his buttocks after he scored in the FA Cup third round victory over Derby County, while one Arsenal fans felt he was safe in betting that he would cover himself in jam if Nicklas Bendtner scored for Arsenal in the Premier League match against Cardiff – which of course the Danish striker went and scored in.

But Lineker may have managed to work his way out of the tricky situation. Given that the two sides meet again on Tuesday in the second leg, Lineker appears to be using the aggregate score to decide the fate of his lugholes.

“Thank heavens there are still 90 minutes to be played,” he posted later in the night.

Now he just has to pray it doesn’t finish 0-0 at the Allianz Arena.
