Jose Mourinho said that “a few kisses and cuddles” were the solution to his tempestuous touch-line row with Diego Costa in Haifa. Mourinho and Costa exchanged angry words at half-time when Costa did not make a run onto a Cesc Fabregas pass.

It was a surprise to many when Costa emerged to play in the second half, but Mourinho revealed afterwards that the secret was affection between the two.

“I wanted him to do a certain movement that he didn't,” Mourinho said afterwards. “I was disappointed that he didn't and I reacted. He did too. At half-time in the dressing room, there were a few kisses and a few cuddles. No problem.”

Mourinho was disappointed with the “bad and dangerous” pitch which led to injuries for Ramires, during the game, and John Terry, who turned his ankle in the second half.

“Such a beautiful stadium, such a fantastic public,” Mourinho said. “They deserve a better surface because the surface was bad and dangerous. In the warm-up before the game, the pitch was really bad. Ramires slid and has a muscular injury. John has an ankle injury I think down to the pitch, we don't know how bad yet.”

Terry is now a doubt for Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at midday, meaning Gary Cahill will likely partner Kurt Zouma in defence.

“The result was 1-0 when John left the pitch, so for John to leave the pitch with the score at 1-0, I know already that he's in trouble,” Mourinho said. “I don't know [about the weekend]. My medical department is really good. John is a special guy with a special desire to recover. But to leave the pitch with the result 1-0, I don't believe too much that he can play.”
