Madrid derby marred by vile racial abuse as Real Madrid defender Marcelo allegedly targeted by Atletico fans

Real triumphed 3-0 over their rivals in the Copa del Rey first leg but the Brazilian was reported to have been targeted by sickening monkey chants in his post-game cool down

Real Madrid may have reasserted their dominance over city rivals Atletico Madrid with the 3-0 Copa del Rey semi-final first leg victory, but the match has been overshadowed by allegations of vile monkey chanting from a small section of the away fans towards Real left-back Marcelo.

The Brazil international was un unused substitute on Wednesday night, and was seen warming down in the Santiago Bernabeu shortly after the final whistle near the 600 away fans that were temporarily held in the stadium.

It was then that the alleged monkey chants were aimed towards Marcelo, with the racial abuse ringing out around the stadium making it easy to hear as there were no Real fans left in the ground.

Even more vile was when the chants turned towards Marcelo’s son, who joined his father on the pitch, with reported chants of “may your dad die” coming from the Atletico supporters emerging shortly after the match.

Marcelo did glare at the culprits while he continued his cool down, but commendably refused to engage in a reaction – perhaps in the acknowledgement of having the last laugh as Real will take a three-goal advantage to the Vicente Calderon in the second leg next week.

Things got off to a poor start for the current La Liga leaders when Pepe’s long range effort was turned in to his own net by left-back Emiliano Insua, before strikers Jese and Angel di Maria.

Marcelo later took to Twitter on Wednesday night, but only in acknowledgement of the victory as he wrote: “Great game # vamoooos HalaMadrid”.
