Manchester City must overturn a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool or risk yet another European failure under Pep Guardiola, after enduring one of their worst week’s since the manager took over last season.

Having been roundly blown away by Liverpool in last week’s first leg, City then managed to lose the Manchester derby 3-2 against fierce rivals United, despite taking an early 2-0 lead, to prevent them from securing the Premier League title. With their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, another defeat tonight at the Etihad Stadium will raise serious concerns about this current side.

Liverpool will need to prove that they can recreate the type of performance that decimated City last week away from Anfield though, with Jürgen Klopp’s side facing their own test after securing such an impressive victory. With doubts over star player Mohamed Salah’s fitness, Klopp will hope to see a defensive shutout to guarantee Liverpool’s progression to the semi-finals for the first time since 2008.

70' - Aymeric Laporte almost gets a bit of luck with his strike from distance as the ball hits Dejan Lovren and loops just over the wrong-footed Loris Karius' crossbar.

Time is running out for City and, truth be told, the players don't look like they believe that this comeback is possible.

GOAL! Manchester City 1-2 Liverpool (Firmino, 77)

Game over.

Liverpool take a 5-1 aggregate lead as Nicolas Otamendi generously gifts the ball to Roberto Firmino, who charges towards goal before slotting the ball across Ederson and in to the net off the far post.

Post-match reaction from Liverpool's players

James Milner: "They [City] are a good team. We couldn't get out in the first half. They had chances but we came out in the second half and went again and got the result.

"Their early goal woke us up maybe. It says a lot about the boys to come under the pressure in that first half. We got hold of it in the second half. We have to learn from the tie but everybody knows how good City are so to beat them over two legs is a big confidence booster for us."

Mo Salah: "My goal came at a good time for us. We struggled at the start but we came back and played hard and got the result."
