Manchester United 'can win the Champions League,' says club legend Paul Scholes - if they add Pedro

Former United midfielder says Old Trafford crowd could help them through

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says the club can "potentially win the Champions League" this season.

Speaking after seeing his former side beat Club Brugge 3-1 in the first leg of their qualifier, Scholes added that the Old Trafford crowd could help to carry Louis van Gaal's squad far.

However, Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle disagreed with Scholes, stating that the squad is not ready.

"I don't think they can go on and win it I dont think they've got quite the squad ready," said Hoddle when asked on BT Sport by Gary Lineker. "I think Van Gaal will look at it and say let's get in [to the group stage] first.

"To win it? No, not at this moment in time."

But Scholes, 40, who won the Champions League twice under Sir Alex Ferguson, had a different opinion.

"I think potentially they could win it," he said. "They've got some good players, if they can add someone like Pedro with a bit of pace up front.

"Manchester United are a big club, there are some great nights we've had [at Old Trafford]. When you're playing against the big teams this crowd can get you through it.

"If there's any team out of this qualifying stage that can win it then I think United are the ones."
