Wayne Rooney has retained his place in the Manchester United starting XI for tonight's game against CSKA Moscow despite mounting concerns over his form.

The striker spearheads a side that has three changes from United's last outing.

Ashley Young, Michael Carrick and Jesse Lingard come in for Matteo Darmian, Ander Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin. The latter missed training this week due to personal reasons. Phil Jones has regained match fitness but is on the bench. He is joined there by Memphis Depay.

Louis van Gaal will be desperate to see his side score with Manchester United failing to do so since their 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow last month, a spell covering three games that all ended 0-0.

The Dutch manager clearly believes Rooney is capable of helping to end that drought.

"It is always Wayne Rooney, but I can imagine that it is because Wayne Rooney is a fantastic player so the expectation is much higher than another player in another club.

"I have confidence in this player. He gives more than just scoring goals, he's our captain and also an example for our whole team. He has more credits than any other player."

MANCESTER UNITED TEAM: De Gea; Young, Smalling, Blind, Rojo; Schweinsteiger, Carrick; Lingard, Mata, Martial; Rooney.

Subs: Romero, Jones, Darmian, Pereira, Herrera, Memphis, Fellaini.
