Ole Gunnar Solskjaer received his biggest sign of approval yet when posing alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Eric Cantona after inspiring Manchester United past Paris Saint-Germain.

The Norwegian secured Champions League progress in the French capital thanks to a stoppage time penalty from Marcus Rashford to advance on away goals with the teams tied 3-3 on aggregate.

But after conjuring up a master plan despite being stripped of several key players - and 10 in total, including the suspended Paul Pogba - Solskjaer continued to boost his claim to be handed the job on a permanent basis.

Having rejuvenated United since the sacking of Jose Mourinho, his former boss Sir Alex was only too happy to provide further evidence that a long-term deal is now likely.

Former team-mate and France international Cantona was also in the picture posted on the club's official social media platforms.

Arguably a legend before his short stint as United boss, Solskjaer appears to have justified the caption for the picture after victory in Paris: "Legends."

United remain deep in battle to claim a top four spot and return to the Champions League next season.

They are currently inside the top four but Arsenal are just a point behind, while Chelsea, one point further back, can leapfrog them if they win their game in hand.

But United will now enter Sunday's game at the Emirates against the Gunners full of confidence with Solskjaer now seemingly accepted as the next permanent boss at Old Trafford.
