Rangers will play Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan in the Europa League group stage.

Rangers were in pot 3 for the draw, held in Switzerland on Friday afternoon, and will face a good contest to progress from group D to the knockout phase.

Benfica, who have never won the Europa League or Uefa Cup but twice won the European Cup in the early 60s, will be the group favourites having finished second last season in the Portuguese top flight.

Standard Liege, who played Arsenal in last season’s competition, finished fifth in the Belgian First Division last season, while Lech finished second behind Legia Warsaw in the Polish Ekstraklasa.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side are currently top of the Scottish Premiership although they have played a game more than Glasgow rivals Celtic, who are going for an historic 10th title in succession.

Celtic were drawn in a potentially tricky Group H with Sparta Prague, AC Milan and Lille.
