Lucy Bronze has been named the Uefa Women's Player of the Year, beating the world player of the year Ada Hegerberg and another of her Lyon teammates in Amandine Henry.

The England defender starred for her country at the World Cup as the Lionnesses reached the semi-finals in France this summer, while also helping Lyon to a fourth consecutive Women’s Champions League title – her second of her career.

The 27-year-old, who has been with French club Lyon since 2017, was England's star performer at the Women's World Cup earlier this year when she won the Silver Ball as the tournament's second-best player.

The former Sunderland, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City full-back also scored one of the goals of the tournament in England's 3-0 quarter-final win against Norway.

She was quick to pay tribute to her England teammates, having captured the imagination of the nation earlier in the summer.

“I want to say thanks to the Lionnesses, we had a great summer and I don’t think I’d have wont his award without them,” the 75-capped international said in a pre-recorded video, as she is currently on international duty for England’s friendly in Belgium.

“Sorry I couldn’t be there this evening to collect this award, though I’m very surprised to be accepting it. I’m ecstatic and humbled.
