Vincent Kompany latest: Man City captain could be out for a month, fears Manuel Pellegrini

Vincent Kompany is facing another spell on the sidelines at Manchester City and will miss Sunday’s derby against Manchester United after suffering his latest injury setback during the Champions League stalemate against Dynamo Kiev.

Kompany, who has appeared in just 18 of City’s 46 games in all competitions this season, lasted just five minutes of the 0-0 draw against Kiev.

And City manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted that the Belgian defender is now waiting for a full assessment of the calf injury – his 14th since signing for the cub in 2008.

"Unfortunately for Vincent Kompany, he has a calf problem again in his muscle,” Pellegrini said. “We will see how it is tomorrow.

"It is difficult for Kompany because he came back very well, he played six games in-a-row but unfortunately for him he couldn't continue.

“It is difficult at this moment to say (how long he will be out), but in the past when he has problem with his calf usually it is a month of the season for him.

“I think he must be very strong because it is very difficult for him to accept.

“Tomorrow with Vincent maybe it will not seem so important after the medical examination.”

Nicolas Otamendi, Kompany’s partner at centre-half, also limped out of the game with a dead leg, but Pellegrini expects the Argentine to be fit to face United.

“Nicolas Otamendi has had a kick and hopefully can recover in the next couple of days,” Pellegrini said.

City’s 3-1 aggregate victory secured a place in Friday’s draw for the quarter-finals – the club’s first appearance in the last eight.

And Pellegrini, who will be replaced by Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola thus summer, insisted it was a big achievement for City to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

"It is a very important achievement for the club,” Pellegrini said. “Before we could not do it, we were very unlucky.

“It is not normal to play against Barcelona twice in the last-16. This is a club that is growing and continue to develop as a big club.

"We will see the next game. In this knockout round, you should know how to play tactical games and we will see how far we can go."
