Chelsea will hope to bounce back after a weekend defeat to Liverpool when they host Barnsley in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday.

Frank Lampard’s team were second-best against the Premier League champions and had Andreas Christensen sent-off, but a host of changes would be expected for the midweek encounter as he gives other players the chance to impress and gain fitness.

New signing Thiago Silva could make his debut, while fellow new arrivals Kai Havertz and Timo Werner will hope to continue getting game time and score their first goals for the club.

Barnsley have lost both their Championship matches so far, though beat Middlesbrough in the second round of the cup last week.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the match.

When is it?

The game kicks off at Stamford Bridge in London on 23 September at 7:45pm.

How can I watch it?

The game will be streamed live on carabaocup.live for those who purchase a match pass.

Team news

Chelsea have Thiago Silva in the squad along with Ben Chilwell, but Hakim Ziyech will still have to wait for his debut. Christensen is suspended and Christian Pulisic is injured.

Barnsley saw two players red-carded at the weekend so both Mads Anderson and Michal Helik are suspended for this encounter.

Predicted line-ups

Chelsea: Caballero; Azpilicueta, Silva, Tomori, Alonso; Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic; Hudson-Odoi, Havertz, Werner.

Barnsley: Collins; Sollbauer, Halme, Williams; Ludewig, Mowatt, Styles, Ritzmaier; Thomas, Schmidt, Frieser.

Odds

Chelsea: 2/11

Draw: 15/2

Barnsley: 17/1

Prediction

Even with rotation and an unfamiliar lineup, Chelsea’s squad depth should be far too strong for a side who look like struggling in the Championship again. Chelsea 2-0 Barnsley
