Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was impressed with the way his young Liverpool team played, despite heart-breaking defeat at West Ham in their FA Cup replay.
The Reds fell out of the competition after West Ham centre-back Angelo Ogbonna scored a towering header in injury time of extra-time - the game was less than a minute away from going to penalties.
But Klopp, three days from having his appendix removed, was disappointed with the result after his side got unlucky following their good performance.
"I thought they could play like that so I'm not surprised," said the German. "But the only reason we were here is to win the game and get to the next round."
From the team that Klopp picked, only Simon Mignolet, Lucas - playing in defence - and Philippe Coutinho could call themselves first-team regulars, although Jordon Ibe and Christian Benteke also started. Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi came off the bench as the Reds pushed for the winner, while James Milner was an extra-time sub.
"We did a lot of things really good, we played the game in the right direction," added Klopp. "But the first real chance went to West Ham.
"Our goal was great, a high-quality goal from Coutinho. Then still we did well, created chances and put up a big fight.
"Then they got a free-kick, without a foul, and we concede a goal. So now we go home."
