Manchester City v Burton Albion: Carabao Cup semi-final preview

Gabriel Jesus struck four as Manchester City powered towards the Carabao Cup final with a ruthless 9-0 demolition of League One Burton at the Etihad Stadium.

The tone for a one-sided semi-final first leg was set as Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring after just five minutes, with Jesus adding two and Oleksandr Zinchenko another before the break.

Jesus grabbed two more in a 13-minute second-half blitz that also saw Phil Foden and Kyle Walker hit the target before Riyad Mahrez completed the scoring late on.

It was City's biggest win since they thrashed Huddersfield 10-1 in 1987 and ensured the second leg will be a formality.

Manchester City make four changes from the side that beat Rotherham 7-0 at the weekend.

Arijanet Muric comes back to play in goal, he's played in every round of the competition so far, Eric Garcia comes into the defence with David Silva and Leroy Sane taking their places in mid-field.

For Burton, understandably they field their strongest possible side making three changes from their 4-0 win at Rochdale.

Stephen Quinn misses out through injury, with Ben Fox and David Templeton on the bench. In come John Brayford, Kieran Wallace and record signing Liam Boyce.

Despite being a semi-final is tonight's match the least interesting, least tense and least consequential match of Manchester City's January?

Jack Pitt-Brooke has the answer:

Burton Albion have the chance to make history over the course of these two legs.

Only three teams have ever eliminated five higher division teams in a single campaign, Swindon Town in 1968/69, Chester City 1974/75 and Bradford City 2012/13.

During this Carabao Cup run Burton have knocked out four higher division teams: Aston Villa 1-0, Burnley 2-1, Nottingham Forest 3-2 and Middlesbrough 1-0.

Standing in their way are the Carabao Cup holders, Manchester City, should be a walk in the park then.

Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about tonight's clash, here's what he had to say:

"It is a remarkable achievement for the team to get through to the semi final of any competition and on the way, beating five good teams. Tonight is about damage limitation, we saw what Man City achieved against Rotherham in the FA Cup on Sunday. The players are here to go out and enjoy it and achieve their best.

"I’m sure City have four big objectives on their agenda, and tonight I'm sure they will hope to score enough goals tonight to make the tie a formality. But our lads will be committed and the football Nigel Clough has achieved with this team is some of the best we have played for years.

"Getting a draw against Manchester United as a conference side in the FA Cup was a fantastic achievement. But tonight is without question the biggest game in our history and the road to this game was much tougher than that United game. So we are going to enjoy it and we look forward to welcoming Manchester City back to the Pirelli Stadium."

Kick off is just 5 minutes away, they've had a remarkable run so far but what can Burton get out of this game?

Man City 0 - 0 Burton

Burton start the match and immediately run the ball at Man City, Lucas Akins find some space and gets a shot off but Muric has it covered.

3 mins: Man City 0 - 0 Burton

Man City work the left-hand channel and flick the ball into the box. Burton hold strong in defence and manage to head the ball away but only as far as Zinchenko who shoots but sends it wide.
