Phil Jones will be on the Manchester United bench for tonight's Capital One Cup tie with Ipswich despite not being fully fit, as the club tries to cope with a defensive injury crisis.

Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair were hurt during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Southampton at the weekend, compounding United's injury problems just days after left-back Luke Shaw broke his leg.

Louis van Gaal has said he will name Jones, who is yet to play this season due to thrombosis, as a substitute for tonight's third round tie at Old Trafford.

He told MUTV: "Rojo has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury. I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders [including Luke Shaw], I shall have Jones on the bench but he is not fit."

Tonight's game kicks off at 8pm.
