Beck ends second reign at the Abbey

John Beck has resigned as manager of Second Division Cambridge United after just eight months of his second spell in charge.

Beck came under fire from fans following a 2-0 defeat to Wrexham on Tuesday, with the Abbey Stadium echoing to chants of "Beck Out". He is the 23rd manager to leave an English league club this season.

The assistant manager Shane Westley has also left the club, who have recorded just three league wins this season and lie second bottom in the table. John Taylor will take over as caretaker, with Dale Brooks as his assistant.

Mark Wright has been suspended as manager of Oxford United over alleged racist comments to the referee John Ross. Although the Third Division club have suffered from poor results recently, they were quick to stress that the incident with Ross was the only reason for his suspension.

Wright was fined £1,750 by the Football Association's disciplinary committee and given a four-game touchline ban after being found guilty of using "abusive, indecent and insulting" language towards Ross after a game against Scunthorpe United last month.

The Leicester City striker Dean Sturridge has joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a month's loan after being told by manager Dave Bassett that he was "surplus" to requirements at Filbert Street.

The Blackburn Rovers striker Marcus Bent is set for a £2m move to Ipswich Town. Blackburn have also confirmed that Napoli are one of a number of clubs interested in signing their striker Corrado Grabbi. A fee of around £6m is being mentioned for the Italian, who cost Blackburn £6.75m from Ternana in the summer.

Cardiff City have signed Middlesbrough's left-back Dean Gordon on a month's loan with a view to a permanent switch.

Australia will file an official complaint to the game's world governing body, Fifa, following the reception they received at Montevideo's airport ahead of Sunday's World Cup play-off with Uruguay. Players and coaches were spat at and had pepper thrown at them.
