It’s the final day of the Championship season and before the chaos of the play-offs takes hold next week, there is the small matter of deciding who goes up to the Premier League… and who drops down to League One.

Cardiff City know a win at home to Reading will see them return to the Premier League for the first time since 2014, but their opponents are not totally safe, sitting only two points above the drop zone in 19th.

Fulham will be waiting in the wings knowing they must win to capitalise on any slip-ups, although they are also playing a relegation-threatened side in Birmingham City.

At the other end of the table, there are five teams fighting to avoid the two final relegation places as Burton Albion and Barnsley are away to play-off chasing Preston North End and Derby County respectively. The final team involved are Bolton Wanderers, who are at home to Nottingham Forest.

Hello and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of the final day of the Championship season!

It may be sunny outside but this could be one of the most dramatic days of the season so far with five teams in the mix for relegation, two vying for promotion and two battling for the final play-off spot. It's definitely worth closing the curtains and staying inside for!

Cardiff know all they must do is better Fulham's result to go up, with the west London club waiting in the wings for any slip-up.

They're both playing Reading and Birmingham City respectively, who are fighting to stay in the Championship, along with Burton, Barnsley and Bolton. However, Burton and Barnsley are playing play-off chasing Preston and Derby respectfully.

Got all that? Good.

We are less than 30 minutes away from the Championship finale, so here is the state of play at the top.

Cardiff and Fulham are battling it out for the final automatic promotion spot. Fulham are relying on Neil Warnock's side slipping up at home to struggling Reading, while they must overcome relegation-embattled Birmingham at St Andrews.

One of those two will be in the playoffs by 3pm this afternoon, along with one of Derby, Preston, or if there is a miracle, Millwall. Derby are in the driving seat, and require just a point unless Preston can smash nine past Burton. The Rams though face Barnsley, who are fighting for their survival,  while Preston must face threatened Burton. Millwall take on Villa, but they require a nine-goal swing in their favour.

At the bottom, there are five teams playing for their Championship lives.

Birmingham and Reading are on 43 points and lead the way but they face the toughest order of all, with the Blues hosting 3rd place Fulham and Reading travelling automatic promotion favourites Cardiff.

This leaves the door open for Barnsley, Burton and Bolton to drag them back into the mire. But it won't be easy. Barnsley travel to playoff chasing Derby and Burton face fellow playoff chasers Preston. The 'easiest' tie sees 23rd place Bolton play Nottingham Forest, who have nothing to play for.

Anything could happen.
