Prime Minister says sporting crowds could return by October

For all football league clubs, the holy grail is promotion to the Premier League. Only three manage to achieve it each season, but the prize is tantalisingly close for a handful of others, if they reach the Championship play-offs.

This year, a crazy final day of the regular season saw Brentford finish third after a final-day defeat, with Fulham fourth, Cardiff fifth and Swansea taking sixth in unexpected fashion.

The Swans’ dream, however, ended after they were beaten by Brentford in the play-off semi-finals.

And the Bees face Fulham at Wembley.

At the weekend it’s the FA Cup final at London’s famous stadium—but then the promotion battle takes centre stage.

For the Championship play-off final, Tuesday, 4 August is the date to pen in the diary.

The match will be shown on Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event, with kick-off set for 7:45 pm (BST).

During the regular campaign, Brentford and Fulham finished level on points; in matches between the sides, the former won 2-0 in June and 1-0 in December.

In usual seasons, the League One and Two finals would take place around the same time – but those have already been played this term.

Wycombe earned promotion to the Championship, while Northampton will step up from League Two to One.
