Postman Ian Hodges set Ryman Division One side Slough on their way to a 2-1 win over League One strugglers Walsall with a goal in the 24th minute. Darren Wrack gave Walsall hope with an equaliser but Glen Harris's 73rd-minute winner, and a second booking and subsequent red card for the Saddlers' Julian Bennett, ended a miserable afternoon for Paul Merson's side.

A little higher up the non-league pyramid, the Conference North club Hinckley had a nasty surprise in wait for Torquay United of League One when Richard Lavery gave them the lead shortly before half-time. Eleven minutes from the end, an unstoppable volley by Richard Cartwright wrapped up the 2-0 win.

Two sides recently in the league, Carlisle United and Exeter City, met League Two sides and prospered. Exeter, mid-table in the Conference, beat the League Two side Grimsby Town 1-0 in Devon, Santos Gaia scoring after six minutes. The Mariners' Michael Reddy was sent off after 73 minutes. Meanwhile Carlisle, second in the Conference, weren't at all overawed by League Two's Bristol Rovers and Brendan McGill's 79th-minute goal earned them a replay, and gave Rovers a long midweek trip north.

Halifax Town of the Conference added to the gloom around Cambridge United with an impressive 3-1 defeat of the lowly League Two side, Martin Foster, Craig Midgeley and Neil Ross their scorers.

Aldershot and Stevenage Borough, both among the leading pack in the Conference, are in the hat. The Shots beat fellow Conference side Canvey Island 4-0, Johnny Dixon and Aaron McLean both scoring twice, while Borough won 1-0 at the Ryman Premier club Billericay.

But the Conference leaders, Barnet, were surprisingly beaten at Underhill by Bath City, Scott Partridge scoring both goals in their 2-1 win.

Rushden & Diamonds of League Two prevailed over League One opposition in the shape of Bradford City when Marvin Robinson scored the game's only goal three minutes from time, and the Conference's bottom club, Leigh RMI, got no comfort from the Cup, losing 2-1 at Cambridge City.

Another Conference side, Forest Green Rovers, had a better day at the office recovering from Steve Fletcher's goal midway through the first half for Jefferson Louis to earn a replay at League One Bournemouth with a 56th-minute equaliser.

League Two prevailed over One when Scott McGleish's goal earned Northampton a 1-0 win over Barnsley.

Wycombe lost their manager last week when Tony Adams resigned but progress to the second round wasn't impeded as they narrowly beat Coalville Town of the Midland Alliance, the smallest club in the first round, 1-0 at the Causeway Stadium.

Hull City, pressing the League One leaders, were given a stiff examination by Morecambe of the Conference but won 3-2, and Milton Keynes Dons just scraped past Lancaster of the Conference North thanks to Wade Small's goal.
