League round-up: Gills succumb to travel sickness and are relegated

Stimson's road-weary Gillingham drop down to League Two but Charlton enter play-offs in style

They had not won away from home since the last day of last season, and another defeat on the road, 3-0 at Wycombe, saw Gillingham slip from 18th to 21st and out of League One. The Chairboys had been relegated last Saturday and yesterday goals from Matt Phillips' curling shot, Alan Bennett's header and Kevin Betsy's deflected effort ensured Mark Stimson's travel sick Gills would be joining them.

At St James's Park, Exeter City had to win to ensure League One safety while a big victory for visitors Huddersfield Town could have seen them promoted. Exeter presented the Terriers' Gary Roberts a goal with an ill-advised pass across their own penalty area, but a Matt Taylor header and Ryan Harley's strike eight minutes from time saw the Grecians win 2-1. Huddersfield turn their attention to play-off semi-finals against Millwall.

Another side harbouring hopes of automatic promotion, Charlton Athletic, also had to console themselves with a play-off place despite a 2-0 win at Oldham Athletic. Captain Nick Bailey's 13th goal of the season, slid in at the far post from a Lloyd Sam cross, and Miguel Angel Llana's free-kick, bobbling through the legs of Latics' goalkeeper Daryll Flahavan, secured the Robins fourth place and matches against Swindon.

Elsewhere, Rickie Lambert scored twice taking his season's total to 37 as Southampton came from behind to beat relegated Southend United 3-1 at St Mary's, while champions Norwich City's season ended with a 2-0 home defeat by Carlisle United, the celebrations perhaps taking their toll.

At 3pm yesterday eight League Two teams were contesting the four play-offs slots. Rotherham United, best placed at the start, lost 3-0 at Hereford United and slipped to fifth while two sides, Morecambe and Aldershot, met at Christie Park where Garry Hunter's side-footed finish earned Sammy McIlroy's Shrimps a 1-0 win, fourth-place and a play-off semi-final tie against Dagenham & Redbridge. The Daggers finished seventh after a Jon Nurse header and Josh Scott tap-in saw them win 2-0 at demoted Darlington. Rotherham and Aldershot meet in the other semi-final.

In the relegation decider north of the border, Falkirk's goalless draw at Kilmarnock was not enough to save them and having been bottom of the Scottish Premier for much of the year the Bairns drop into the First Division. "We came up a little bit short but certainly not on desire, commitment and effort," Steven Pressley, head coach since February and set to continue, said. "It was an emotional dressing room, there were tears in there."

Local lad Jason Walker's extra-time goal at Wembley earned Barrow a 2-1 FA Trophy win over last year's victors and Conference champions Stevenage Borough, who led through Andy Drury's 10th minute goal but had to play for over an hour of normal time with 10 men after David Bridges' red card. Substitute Lee McEvilly levelled in the 72nd minute and Barrow's Robin Hulbert was sent off in the 90th for elbowing Charlie Griffin, who couldn't play on leaving Stevenage with nine men.

Barcelona moved closer to retaining the Spanish title with a 3-2 win at Sevilla, with Lionel Messi scoring the opener. Real Madrid stay a point behind after thrashing Athletic Bilbao 5-1.

Arjen Robben scored twice as Champions League finalists Bayern Munich won their 22nd Bundesliga title with a 3-1 win at Hertha Berlin. Second-placed Schalke 04 drew 0-0 at Mainz.

Ups and downs

Leeds United

Playing with 10 men for 56 minutes, a 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers saw Simon Grayson's side promoted to the Championship.

Grimsby Town

Lost 3-0 at Burton Albion to slip down to the Conference; Gillingham also lost 3-0, at Wycombe, and were relegated to League Two.
