Ben May was the hero at Layer Road last night, his goal two minutes from the end of extra time giving League One side Colchester United a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion, and the probable shock of the Carling Cup second round.

The Colchester manager, Phil Parkinson, hailed his side's performance: "To beat a Premiership side in front of a full house was tremendous.

"I'm very pleased because we were outstanding tonight. I thought we carved out a lot of good chances and openings."

Geoff Horsfield had pulled the Baggies back into the game after Craig Fagan's early strike.

West Brom's manager Gary Megson said: "We didn't perform in the first half or take our chances, and fell to a sucker punch in the dying minutes.

"As a manager you are always under pressure, but it is up to me to pick the best team for the occasion and hope they turn in a good performance."
