The Second Division club enjoyed a spectacular rout of Brentford yesterday, winning 6-2 at Griffin Park with their goals shared around. The Latvian midfielder Vitalijs Astafjevs opened the scoring after five minutes, the striker Nathan Ellington and the midfielder Lewis Hogg scored twice each before the defender Scott Jones, on loan from Barnsley, hit the sixth.

Paul Evans, from the penalty spot, and Andy Scott were on the mark for Brentford as Rovers climbed into mid-table. The Pirates will have enjoyed their day even more for the fact that there was further misery for the other Bristol club after City lost 1-0 at home to Rotherham thanks to Leo Fortune-West's goal.

Bury are up to second place after Darren Bullock scored the only goal of the game against Northampton in the 72nd minute at Gigg Lane. Wycombe are third despite Luton hitting back for a 1-1 draw at Adams Park. Steve Brown had put the home side ahead only for Tresor Kandol to head the equaliser with nine minutes remaining.

Peterborough slipped from second to fifth after losing 2-0 at home to Swansea. A Matthew Bound penalty and Jason Price goal helped the visitors to all three points at London Road.

The Nationwide League newcomers, Kidderminster, moved into the top three of the Third Division with a 2-0 win at Brighton. Over 6,000 people saw Harriers open the scoring shortly into the second half at the Withdean Stadium through Ian Foster. Dean Bennett doubled the advantage.

The leaders, Chesterfield, were held to a 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe thanks to a late equaliser from Steve Torpey after the substitute Roger Willis had given the Spireites the lead in the 75th minute. Chesterfield had David Reeves sent off.

Leyton Orient are up to second place but had to come from behind to beat Exeter at Brisbane Road. Alex Inglethorpe gave the visitors an early lead but second-half goals from David McGhee and Matthew Lockwood - from the penalty spot - brought the home side all three points.

Torquay's Eifion Williams scored twice in the dying moments of the game to beat Blackpool 3-2 at home. Goals from Brett Ormerod and Richard Wellens, either side of Habib Sissoko's strike, had put the visitors in front, but Williams snatched a thrilling 3-2 win for the Gulls that lifted them out of the bottom three.
