Steve McClaren's appointment as Derby head coach, succeeding Nigel Clough who was sacked on Saturday after just over four and a half years in charge, sees him return for a third spell at the club he served first as a player and then assistant to Jim Smith.

McClaren's reputation in this country has suffered significant damage after his doomed spell in charge of England but he is still revered by many Derby supporters for his achievements in helping guide the Rams to the Premier League in the 1995-96 season alongside Smith.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at McClaren's career since he was dismissed by England in December 2007.

FC Twente (June 2008 - May 2010)

McClaren made a return to club management in Holland and guided the club from Enschede to second place in the Eredivisie behind AZ Alkmaar and to the final of the Dutch Cup, losing on penalties to Heerenveen. The following season Twente were crowned champions for the first time in their history but McClaren left to take over as manager of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg (May 2010 - February 2011)

McClaren could not repeat his success in Germany. Wolfsburg lost their first three Bundesliga matches but recovered to rise up the table. However, the side were struggling again around the turn of the year and at the beginning of February he was sacked.

Nottingham Forest (June 2011 - October 2011)

After just 111 days in charge and without a home league victory to his name, McClaren decided that the financial restraints placed on him meant he would not be able to succeed in the job. He said at the time: "I resigned. They don't share the ambition that I came for."

FC Twente (January 2012 - February 2013)

McClaren guided Twente to a sixth-placed finish on his return. He targeted the title again the following season but resigned amid a six-game winless run, claiming that the club had failed to back him in the face of growing unrest from the fans.

Since the beginning of July, McClaren has been a part of Harry Redknapp's coaching staff at QPR. The short-term contract he signed in the summer was set to expire this week.
