Sky Bet League One strugglers Colchester have sacked manager Tony Humes.

The U's have won just one of their last nine league matches and threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at home to bottom club Crewe on Tuesday night.

Colchester are 19th in the table and a tweet confirming his departure read: "#ColU have parted company with boss Tony Humes. We would like wish Tony all the best for the future."

Humes had been in charge at Layer Road since September 2014 when he stepped up to replace Joe Dunne, winning 22 of his 67 games in charge.

A statement on the club's official website, www.cu-fc.com read: "Colchester United and manager Tony Humes have parted company.

"Following Tuesday night's game against Crewe Alexandra, Tony and Chairman Robbie Cowling met and the decision was taken that Humes and the club would go their separate ways.

"Humes felt that his presence was becoming detrimental to the club and the young players that he had nurtured in his time at the U's and it would be best to remove himself from the equation.

"Robbie would like to place on record his thanks to Tony for his hard work, not only over the past fourteen months but throughout the years he has been at Colchester United."

"Assistant boss Richard Hall and current U21s boss John McGreal will take charge of Saturday's game at Burton Albion, assisted by Wayne Brown."
