Clubs pay tribute after death of Steve Jagielka, brother of Premier League defender Phil

The former midfielder played over 200 times in the Football League and Conference

Former Shrewsbury Town and Accrington Stanley midfielder Steven Jagielka has passed away at the age of 43.

The older brother of Sheffield United defender Phil, Steven won the Conference with Stanley in 2006 and spent part of the 2003/04 season with the Blades too - with Phil also in the squad - without making an appearance.

His former clubs have been sending messages of condolence after Jagielka’s death was confirmed.

Accrington said they were “absolutely devastated to hear of the death of former midfielder Steve Jagielka”, highlighting his involvement in their promotion season.

They have also confirmed there would be a minute’s applause before the match against Sunderland on Wednesday night, in memory of their former player.

Shrewsbury and AFC Telford United, two more clubs Jagielka represented, also tweeted their dismay at the news.

Sheffield United, with Steve’s brother Phil now back at the club in the Premier League, sent the “condolences of all at the Blades” to both their player “and the rest of the Jagielka family at this difficult time.”
