Spear at football match

A goalkeeper for an American high school football team has been suspended for two games after spearing an opponent in the final moments of the match.

Video of the incident shows Pine Forest goalkeeper Cassie Sturtz leap past the ball and dive into the midriff of rival player Riley Barrett from Pinecrest High School.

Barrett was floored by the challenge; but it has been reported she was eventually able to leave the field without medical assistance.

The footage has received over one million views in five days.

Officials took no immediate action as the striker had been judged to be offside – a decision which might have actually been incorrect.

Was this offside decision incorrect?

Sturtz has now been given a retrospective two match ban for a “flagrant contact foul”.

The match finished 4-1 to Pinecrest High School.
