1966 World Cup final: Watch highlights in colour of England's victory over West Germany 50 years on

Special ceremonies will be held at Wembley on Saturday to remember the 1966 World Cup final victory

Saturday marks 50 years since England’s greatest moment in football history as the anniversary of the 1966 World Cup final victory is celebrated across the country.

Half a century has passed since Bobby Moore famously lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy high into the air at Wembley after England defeated West Germany 4-2 in extra-time. With the current England national team in disarray after being knocked out of Euro 2016 by Iceland and new manager Sam Allardyce given the task of rebuilding the nation’s hopes, reflecting on the only victorious final in English football history will certainly bring smiles back to the faces of those who were able to see it.

A special ceremony will be held at Wembley Arena on Saturday to commemorate the victory, with Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Geoff Hurst – the man who scored a famous hat-trick in the final – due to recount their memories of the match.

British actor Martin Freeman will also participate in the ceremony as he will read out memories from the late Moore, with live music set to be provided by James, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Squeeze, Reef, Lemar and the Troggs.

A gala dinner will also take place at Wembley Stadium later in the evening.

The team that day 50 years ago was made up of Gordon Banks, George Cohen, Ray Wilson, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore, Alan Ball, Nobby Stiles, Martin Peters, Bobby Charlton, Roger Hunt and Geoff Hurst.
