Ronaldo plays down Ballon d'Or talk after Nations League victory

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared disgruntled after realising his teammate Bernardo Silva had beaten him to the Uefa Nations League Player of the Tournament award.

Portugal beat the Netherlands in the final 1-0, thanks to Goncalo Guedes’ strike, to win the inaugural edition of the tournament.

Ronaldo impressed throughout the finals in Portugal, scoring a hat-trick in the 3-1 win against Switzerland in the semi-final.

But Uefa were more impressed by Silva’s tiresome displays, with the Manchester City star picking up the award.

And Ronaldo appeared miffed by the decision, failing to embrace Silva like his teammates, who slapped the City star on the head.

“I’m happy to have helped the team,” Silva said after picking up the award.

“Of course, the most important thing was that Portugal won, but when you can add an individual award to it, then that’s also good.

“I’m really happy with my performance, not just here in the Nations League, but throughout this whole season.

“I’m happy to finish a brilliant season in this way, and now I will rest and try to do even better next season.”
